Botswana National Malaria Elimination Programme and SADC E8 Secretariat convened the Malaria Elimination Acceleration Plan Meeting on the 19th April 2018. The meeting was held at Ministry of Health and  Wellness in Gaborone, Botswana.

The purpose of the meeting to hold discussion with Botswana with a view of getting country inputs on the Regional E8 Acceleration Plan. This meeting also provided an important opportunity for Botswana to mobilize additional resources to address critical country gaps which are not covered with existing country resources.

When officially welcoming attendants, the Programme Manager- Ms Mosweunyane indicated that the meeting came at the right time as Botswana has just conducted Malaria Programme Review exercise and has also developed the new Malaria Elimination Strategy. She also said that the support from E8 will assist in realizing the implementation of the new strategy.

The SADC E8 Director, during her presentation indicated that the E8 felt it was necessary for E8 to come to Botswana in order to understand the current situation and also country priorities in which E8 can lend a support. The E8 director informed the meeting that E8 countries have embarked on the development of an Acceleration Plan, to regain the momentum towards elimination in the frontline four by 2020. She indicated that the idea of the Acceleration Plan was reached by E8 Council of Ministers in 2017, and that a series of meetings have been held to develop a framework for the acceleration plan, as well as to agree on a set of regional interventions that would complement country strategies in getting countries to zero.
